The Haliburton Highlands is a special part of Ontario, and is considered by many of those seeking to experience the outdoors, to be Ontario's premiere destination. Its countless lakes, streams, and dense forest provide the backdrop for many of Ontario's favourite outdoor recreational activities ... Fishing ... ATVing ... Snowmobiling ... Hiking ... Skiing,..etc. And just like the famous Algonquin Park that it borders, Haliburton has steadfastly resisted any type of development that could take away from its unique natural beauty. The resorts that grace the shores of Haliburton's abundant lakes are some of Ontario's best kept vacation secrets....

IT'S TIME TO START PLANNING FOR HARDWATER WALLEYE:

In Haliburton County, the towns of Minden and Carnarvon offer some really good laketrout fishing. Awesome evening on the ice March Fishing January '08 Walleye and perch But the village of Haliburton is located on a a different chain of lakes fed by a different watershed. And it is this Lake Kashagawigamog chain that provides some of the best hardwater WALLEYE fishing south of highway #17. Zebra mussels do not propagate in these lakes, and unlike most other Ontario lakes, the walleye fishing actually improves from year to year. And Kashaga Lodge has the only walleye ice fishing operation in the County of Haliburton. Kashaga Walleye

One of the reasons for the popularity of Kashaga Lodge's ice fishing package is that the huts are within easy walking distance of the cottages, enabling anglers to fish when the bite is on, and eat, snooze, play poker, or watch the January '08 Walleye Bookends football game in the comfort of their comfy heated cottage in between the morning and afternoon bite. Each cottage has fully-equipped kitchen, 4-pc bathroom, cable TV, and barbecue on a deck overlooking the huts. Oh, and don't forget your laptop so you can use the free wireless internet at your cottage to e-mail pictures back to your buddies whose wives actually think that household projects are more important than sitting on the ice doing scientific research with different colours and jigging techniques.
Visit the "WINTER">>"Ice Fishing" page of the website for more specific info on why Lake Kashagawigamog is one of Central Ontario's favourite lakes for hardwater walleye.

How it all started

HALIBURTON SNOWMOBILE TRAILS:

Haliburton County is legendary within Ontario for providing a unique snowmobiling experience for its visitors. Haliburton County’s southern border with Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes roughly defines the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. And the village of Haliburton is quite centrally located within this region of forests, lakes, streams, rock outcroppings, and breathtakingly beautiful vistas, all interconnected via trails, trails and more trails.
Kashaga Lodge is ideally located for sledders, less than a 5 minute snowmobile ride from the on the property hub of the Haliburton County Snowmobile Association trails where the famous Haliburton / Victoria railtrail from Lindsay, and the hydro cut trail from Algonquin Park converge right in the village of Haliburton. After a day on the trails, note that Kashaga Lodge is only a 3-minute sled-ride to the gas station, grocery store, and the Beer Store, (without running the road.) 2-bedroom cottage

At Kashaga Lodge, riders can park their trucks and trailers right beside their cottage, and park their sleds right by their deck. And there’s plenty of space right on the property for warming up and testing sleds before heading out. Furthermore, Lake Kashagawigamog is 15 km long, and provides a natural winter “extension” of the lodge’s 5 acres. CSRA Semi-Pro #511

New this winter ’09, sledders have free use of Kashaga Lodge’s helmet cam for recording their trail “experience” on DVD, and also free use of the lodge’s radar gun to definitively establish, once and for all, who in the group is “d' Man.”

Kashaga Lodge happens to be a major sponsor for one of Ontario's top CSRA snowcross racers, #511 Jaymie McPhail. On non-race weekends, a popular attraction for guests on the property is photographing him practicing on the property's full-scale snowcross track and/or the hundred-foot freestyle ramp.

WINTER ATVING:

Kashaga Lodge has one of the best locations in Haliburton County for accessing the ATV trails without trailering. It is important to be aware that at least 90% of Haliburton ATV trails are also HCSA snowmobile trails during the snowmobile season, and as such, are illegal for ATVs.

HOWEVER, two of the most popular (and treacherous) ATV trails in Haliburton County, the "Hillbilly Trail," and the "Goat Trail" are Crown land the infamous GOAT PATH and are not used by the Haliburton County Snowmobile Association, and are legal for ATVs. Even at the best of times, these trails are a 7 to 9 out of 10 for difficulty.HILLBILLY TRAIL Anyone attempting them in winter MUST have winches, NOT riding two-up, definately should not be alone, and should expect to spend a lot of time winching. Trailpasses are not required, and Kashaga Lodge guests are provided with both a detailed map, as well as written directions.
From the lodge, the Hillbilly trail can be accessed via 3 km of lake running, and another 4 km of ATV-legal county road (in order to bypass the HCSA railtrail.)
